Program Description

Program name: Paddle or Portage

Paddle or Portage is a free SMS service that returns current river gauge data from the USGS. Users text an 8-digit USGS site number to +1 (507) 728-3569 and receive a single automated reply with flow rate (CFS), gauge height (feet), and reading timestamp.

Message Frequency

You will receive exactly one (1) SMS reply per message you send. No additional messages will be sent. This service does not send unsolicited messages, marketing messages, or recurring notifications of any kind.

Message & Data Rates

Message and data rates may apply depending on your carrier plan. Standard SMS rates charged by your mobile carrier apply to messages you send and receive. Satellite messaging charges from your satellite device provider (e.g. Garmin, Zoleo) apply separately and are your responsibility.

Paddle or Portage does not charge any fee for this service.

How to Opt Out

Text STOP to +1 (507) 728-3569 at any time to opt out. After opting out, you will receive no further messages from this service. To resume using the service, simply text a gauge number again.

Consent

By texting a gauge number to Paddle or Portage, you consent to receive a single automated SMS reply containing the requested river gauge data. No further messages will be sent as a result of this interaction.

Disclaimer

Gauge data is sourced live from the USGS Water Services API and is typically 15–60 minutes old depending on the gauge. Paddle or Portage is not affiliated with the USGS. This service is provided as-is, as a free side project, with no guarantee of uptime or data accuracy. Do not rely solely on this service for safety-critical decisions in the field.
